HoomBand | Ingrédient n°1 : Les histoires hypnotiques

HoomBand | Ingredient No. 1: Hypnotic stories

Who would think that a walk in a village in Provence or a trip aboard a space shuttle could... put you to sleep!

At the heart of HoomBand lie many stories to lead you to the shores of sleep.

What makes the power of these stories is that they were written by hypnosis professionals who know exactly which ingredients to include to put you to sleep!

Because there are as many sleeper profiles as sleepers, the Livlab app (available on iPhone and Android) aims to be as complete as possible, to provide a customizable solution, depending on each person's mood or sensitivity.

In this article, we will break down a hypnotic story to understand how it works.

Summary:

1- What exactly is hypnosis?

In three words: it’s a modified state of consciousness (EMC). Being hypnotized puts you in a state similar to meditation or drowsiness. You’re not really asleep but you’re not really awake either.

The word hypnosis comes from the Greek “hupnos,” which means “sleep.” The Greeks therefore suspected that hypnosis had something to do with sleep!

Far from the spectacular hypnosis phenomena on TV, we all experience it in our daily lives.

Reading a book and being “absorbed” to the point of not paying attention to your surroundings is a semi-hypnotic state. The same goes when you're watching a Netflix series; you no longer notice the decoration of your room, the exact color of the objects around you, your mind is “fixed” on something.

Dreamers who get lost in their thoughts also approach this state.

What is therefore certain:

  • hypnosis is truly completely safe. No one will enter your mind!
  • everyone can be hypnotized, even if some people are more receptive than others
  • beyond sleep, hypnosis can help you manage your stress

2- Its scientifically demonstrated effectiveness

Hypnosis is not magic. Science is studying it and what it discovers will probably convince many.

A study published in 2014 shows that hypnosis can extend the duration of deep slow-wave sleep, also called slow-wave sleep, by up to 80% increase for some people! It is this sleep that allows your cells to regenerate and your immune system to strengthen. [1]

Another worldwide study found that 58% of those hypnotized for the experiment noted better sleep quality, with no side effects. [2]

Let's note anyway that hypnosis has had convincing results on... children and adolescent insomniacs. [3]

3- A Hoom story analyzed in detail

Let's go behind the scenes of a hypnotic story offered in the Hoom app.

We will dissect Journey into Space , which you can (re)listen to freely here:

Phase 1 - Introduction

The story starts like a typical Netflix movie so that our listeners get into the game. There is no more life on Earth and we must leave.

You have been selected among the trinity of dreamers to repopulate a planet in the Trappist 1 system. You will therefore take a ship for this journey.

Phase 2 - Preparation for trance (conditioning)

We will use the VAKOG technique, stimulating the 5 senses (sight, hearing, kinesthetic, smell, taste). This method is ideal for preparing the minds of our listeners, as it is through these five senses that we access information about the world around us, this data being filtered (by our beliefs or deep convictions, our education, our experiences…) before reaching us subjectively.

The induction that follows will be mainly focused on the kinesthetic (touch and body movements).

"To begin, I invite you to move to the "pre-weightlessness" suit room. This room allows the technical team to custom-make each traveler's suit and make the final adjustments."

..... Are you ready? Very well. Don't forget, for the fusion with the "pre-weightlessness" suit to be as effective as possible, you need to be perfectly relaxed. Lie down in the position where you are most comfortable. Take the time to find it, to reposition an arm, a leg, a foot... Very well, are you there?

....The breathing is calmer and calmer, and it evolves more and more to become a perfect breath

.... And when the suit gently wraps your fingers, I wonder what texture it is made of and what sensation it gives? What temperature is this suit? And this sensation of warmth or cold, is it the same at the top and bottom of the body?

Look at yourself from the outside, behind your closed eyelids, as if you were outside your body. Watch this suit continue to unfold upwards and downwards. Its color, its texture, the noise it makes...

Phase 3 - Deepening of the trance

Just like for the trance preparation phase, there are many techniques for deepening the state. Thibault Gouttier, the hypnotherapist who created this story, works a lot with the Fluff technique.

In hypnosis, Fluff is verbal filler. This filler does not mean "talking to say nothing," it most often includes linguistic tools belonging to the Milton Model such as comment adverbs, embedded commands, analog marking, presuppositions...

Here we will continue the deepening thanks to the ship's takeoff. It is a new stage symbolizing spiritual elevation, allowing us to leave our worries behind us, on the earth, in the past.

The traveler is instructed to leave behind everything that weighs on him, he is made to watch all that move away with the earth (visual), he is invited to pay attention to the beginning of the weightlessness phase inside the body and its evolution (kinesthetic), and to let himself be rocked by the sound of the takeoff (auditory).

"Around you, we gather the other dreamers who will leave with you on this journey.... The breathing is even deeper.... You go down even deeper...

...Life that continues, that follows its course. The idea that the present is at the moment of the word, and the past of that word there. And the muscles relax... It's almost takeoff. Even before feeling what will happen in a few moments in your body, start imagining it...

When the ship takes off, in the calm and lightness of the ships of our century, how will it react? Imagine it before feeling it in a few moments... As if you were above or beside yourself. See yourself in your suit, lying down. When the takeoff begins, you will leave all your past behind you. The only thing that will matter is you, and what you will do with your life. To what purpose, to what idea, for what goal will you live?

.....Weightlessness.... I'm sure it must be a strange sensation, isn’t it? Breathing must be so different when the body’s weight becomes lighter and lighter... almost imperceptible... the unexpected sensation .... Time flows, more and more slowly ... slips ... and slows down .... Like air in the lungs .... And slows down, like thoughts ... and slows down like ideas ........ to finally stop ...... thinking ..... suspend all activity .... The muscles that are perfectly relaxed, and yet relax even more.... Time seems to fix ... to fall asleep .... In a sleeping and calm space..."

Phase 4 - Release (Sleep mode activation)

This is the hibernation phase by cryogenization in our story. We aim to settle the listener a bit after several phases where they were highly stimulated, with many stimuli. This time, we seek emptiness, calm, weightlessness.

The artificial intelligence voice confides its desire to have a floating body, a story, a past to forget, a past to remember, a future to create, to have emotions... the idea is to make the listener "lucky" to live.

"We will now install you in the cryogenization room. This large white room,

Take the time to observe the mechanism that allows travelers to be cryogenized. To peacefully put bodies, souls, and thoughts to sleep, in order to wake them perfectly relaxed after the journey. To sleep the most restful night, and wake up recharged, ready to tackle any mission.

And from what moment does the sensation also begin to be felt inside the body? And how does it move from the surface of the skin to the inside? And the more it continues to settle... the more you already feel sleepiness settling as well... the breathing that calms... the muscles that relax completely... more and more... better and better...

... and this chest that breathes... the face is so relaxed, you can feel the heaviness ... like in the whole... the ... body... you are already.... no longer there..."

And we finish with a complete shutdown of body and mind to finally sleep, performed by artificial intelligence. Like a checklist, everything is validated by a "pleasant beep."

In our stories, we can also use other methods:

  • Sprinkling

Sprinkling is the act of emphasizing certain words or syllables in a sentence, in order to send a message to the unconscious. It is a very effective and widely used technique in hypnosis.

To highlight chosen words, one can either leave a short silence before and after, or modify the voice. The key is that it is subtle enough not to be perceived by the person's conscious mind. In summary, it is a subliminal message inserted into the script.

  • The rhythm

During the different phases of the script, the rhythm and speech rate must be adapted. Gradually, from the introduction to the narrative plateau, the pace should slow down. The goal is to have sufficiently long silent spaces between suggestions so that the subject can immerse themselves.

  • The sound

From start to finish, we use an ambient background layer with a frequency of 432 Hz. This is the binaural frequency used to reduce stress and anxiety.

Behind every hypnotic story in the Hoom app lies a complex alchemy.

And that's why they work so well: to induce a state of deep relaxation and open the doors to sleep.
