If you feel a little sick, wait before rushing to the doctor! Your ailment may be easily cured by one of the natural tips you can do at home without even spending a cent.
Here are some natural remedies for everyday issues that are not very serious. A small preventive message nonetheless to pregnant women: some remedies are contraindicated during pregnancy or when you are breastfeeding.
Hangover
For this classic, you absolutely need to rehydrate your body: drink water of course, but also fruit juice, because it contains natural sugars that eliminate alcohol. Tomato juice in particular can give you a good dose of antioxidants, a banana smoothie to rebuild your potassium reserves, or coconut water to replenish all kinds of electrolytes. If you want a hot drink, opt for a herbal tea with honey, lemon, and ginger, which will prevent you from feeling nauseous.
Eat whatever you want to regain strength, unless you have diarrhea: then a little rice will do, but the important thing is not to be hungry anymore!
Sunburns
To soothe the burn, try compresses soaked in cold water with a tablespoon of baking soda until you feel better. If you don't have baking soda on hand, you can try a compress of plain yogurt or whipped egg whites – full of proteins, they will help rebuild your skin.
To hydrate your skin, apply honey, aloe vera, tomato slices, or calendula oil, all substances with moisturizing and soothing qualities. Be careful if you have hypersensitive skin, however, the clays sometimes recommended online can worsen your burn!
Mosquitoes
You may have already heard about citronella and its miracle effects (which you believed before realizing it didn't work that well). Fortunately, there are other solutions!
You can make a mosquito trap using naturally sweet and sticky substances, but you might not want to collect a whole bottle of dead mosquitoes (yuck...). Otherwise, try aromatherapy with essential oils of lemon eucalyptus, ylang-ylang, or lavender in a diffuser. If you are the type of botanist in your spare time, start a small indoor garden: prefer basil, geraniums, and mint.
If it's already too late, try two drops of lavender essential oil, a natural anti-inflammatory also used for burns. Apply them gently on your bites, without rubbing, and repeat as soon as the itching returns. For children, be careful! Lavender essential oil must be diluted in vegetable oil.
Migraine
For headache, try first to lie down: if you manage to fall asleep, when you wake up everything may be back to normal. If you can't sleep, you can try massaging your temples or applying a cold compress on your forehead.
Still not working? Well, let's get serious: inhalations. Inhalations with rosemary, mint, or lavender all have soothing properties for headaches. Complement this treatment with a sweet herbal tea with marjoram, verbena, or jasmine for even more effect.
Last solution: mix cinnamon powder with water to form a paste that you will apply on your forehead until the pain disappears. You should no longer have pain... and you will come out of this story smelling like Christmas cookies.
Removing a splinter
A splinter may seem insignificant while hurting you a lot... to dislodge it, nothing better than a homemade poultice using baking soda and lavender essential oil.
- Wash the bitten area with soap to make sure it is clean.
- Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with a few drops of lavender essential oil.
- Add just enough water so that your mixture becomes a thick paste.
- Apply the paste on the splinter and keep it in place with gauze and a bandage.
- After an hour or two, your splinter should have come out by itself into the paste. After that, you will need to use tweezers! :O
Unclogging the nose
To unclog your nose, try inhalations with thyme or eucalyptus essential oil followed by a good thyme herbal tea (even if you feel like you are drinking the roast chicken of your childhood in liquid form).
For stubborn blocked noses, you can try a mustard seed poultice:
- Mix a few tablespoons of crushed mustard seeds with a cup of wheat flour and a little water.
- Put Vaseline on your chest, then apply the poultice. Be careful not to leave it on for more than 15 minutes, you could burn yourself!
Treating a foot blister
If it is a small blister that does not hurt and you do not intend to repeat the activity that caused it, do nothing: it will heal by itself.
However, if it is a large blister that hurts a lot, you need to pierce it:
- Take a sterilized needle (which you can heat with a lighter or dip in 90° alcohol), and pierce the blister on the side very carefully. Leave the skin, which will serve as a natural bandage.
- Apply the thin skin found between onion slices on your blister with a bandage, which you will renew morning and evening. Onion is a natural healing agent! You can also wash the blister with white vinegar, a natural antiseptic.
- Protect your bandaged blister with a cotton sock if you have to go out; otherwise, let it breathe in the open air.
Smoothies to prevent diseases
To give a boost to your immune system, facilitate digestion, or improve blood circulation, you need to stock up on antioxidants.
These antioxidants are found in fruits and vegetables. Nothing is easier to consume the recommended 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day than making smoothies and other revitalizing drinks full of vitamins. Try a honey and ginger grog for sore throat and runny nose, or a dandelion coffee for a little health break.
Herbal teas of all kinds
Before going to bed, you may have trouble relaxing or falling asleep. A hot herbal tea in the evening or morning can bring you countless benefits, as infusions are as varied as they are useful. Not to be confused with tea, herbal teas and infusions do not contain theine, which is a stimulant. However, if you want to cure small inconveniences like nervousness, arthritis, or nausea, infusions can help you.
Soothing herbal teas contain alkaloids and essential oils, and are most often natural sedatives and hypnotics. For good sleep, favor linden, chamomile, or valerian. By combining several plants such as lemon balm and valerian, you could achieve a result similar to taking benzodiazepines... without the side effects!
